- Line 1 初九Bottom line (1st) · Yang磐桓，利居貞，利建侯。Hesitating and circling; it is beneficial to remain steadfast and to establish feudal lords.
- Line 2 六二2nd line · Yin屯如邅如，乘馬班如，匪寇婚媾，女子貞不字，十年乃字。Difficulty and hesitation; riders circle on horseback—not robbers, but suitors. The woman stays steadfast and does not pledge herself; after ten years she pledges.
- Line 3 六三3rd line · Yin即鹿無虞，惟入于林中，君子幾不如舍，往吝。Chasing deer without a guide only leads into the forest. The noble person sees the signs and gives up; to go on brings regret.
- Line 4 六四4th line · Yin乘馬班如，求婚媾，往，吉無不利。Riders circle on horseback, seeking marriage; going brings good fortune, nothing is unfavorable.
- Line 5 九五5th line · Yang屯其膏；小貞吉，大貞凶。Difficulty in dispensing one's bounty. In small matters steadfastness brings good fortune; in great matters, even steadfastness brings misfortune.
- Line 6 上六Top line (6th) · Yin乘馬班如，泣血漣如。Riders circle on horseback; bloody tears flow.
